Purpose of the Support Item
This line item is exclusively for participants who are identified in their NDIS plan as having High Support Needs (HSN), particularly those whose disability presents complex or challenging behaviours that require intensive management and intervention. It funds the direct, hourly services of highly skilled support workers overnight.
The support is claimed for the Weekday Night period (typically defined as 8:00 pm to 6:00 am, Monday night through Friday morning). The elevated rate for this item is in place to ensure a sufficient supply of experienced, highly trained staff is available to provide continuous, active support during these high-cost overnight hours to safely manage and respond to complex behavioural needs.
What the Support Covers
This hourly support covers the specialist support worker time dedicated to:
Active Night Supervision for Complex Needs: Providing continuous oversight, frequent interaction, and assistance that cannot be provided under an inactive (sleepover) shift model.
Implementing PBSP Overnight: Following and executing complex strategies detailed in a positive behaviour support plan (PBSP) to manage nighttime issues, such as restlessness, safety risks, or frequent, escalating behaviours.
Intensive Personal Care/Monitoring: Delivering complex personal care or monitoring that requires a high degree of skill and immediate response capacity during the overnight hours.
Important Note
This funding is specifically allocated for the support worker's time only, and its utilisation must be justified by the participant's intensive support requirements, as documented by a Behaviour Support Practitioner and approved in the NDIS plan for High Support Needs (HSN).
