This NDIS support item falls under the Capital budget and is used for the Rental of Assistive Technology. It specifically covers the rental of a Prefabricated Upper Limb Orthosis, corresponding to Registration Group 0135 (Prostheses and Orthoses).

An Upper Limb Orthosis is a device (often a splint or brace) used to provide external support, alignment, or correction to a participant's arm, wrist, hand, or shoulder. A "prefabricated" orthosis means the device is ready-made in various sizes, rather than being custom-moulded to the individual.


This line item funds the temporary use (rental) of these devices, which is suitable when:

Trial and Assessment: The participant needs to test the functionality and comfort of a specific type of orthosis before a purchase is considered.

Acute or Short-Term Need: The device is required immediately following an injury or surgery, and the need for the device is not expected to be permanent.

Therapeutic Phase: The orthosis is being used as part of a time-limited therapy program where adjustments or changes in device type are anticipated.

The rental cost covers the use of the orthosis, which helps the participant improve function, maintain optimal joint position, manage tone and spasticity, or protect vulnerable areas of their upper limbs as recommended by an Occupational Therapist or Physiotherapist.
