Line Item Description

This support item is a high-level, complex form of Assistive Technology (AT) within the NDIS, designed for participants with significant postural, movement, or pressure care challenges that persist during sleep.

The support covers Custom Made Sleep Positioning Systems and Accessories, which are not off-the-shelf items but rather therapeutic systems specifically fabricated or moulded to an individual's unique body shape and clinical needs.

Key Features and Importance:

Complex Postural Management: These systems are essential for individuals who cannot maintain a safe or therapeutic lying position independently. They use customised supports (e.g., blocks, wedges, contouring pads, supports) to achieve and maintain optimal alignment of the head, trunk, and limbs throughout the night.

Preventative Care: The primary clinical goals include preventing the progression of contractures, managing or slowing down the development of musculoskeletal deformities (such as scoliosis or hip migration), and maintaining joint integrity.

Pressure Injury Mitigation: By distributing pressure evenly and preventing sustained pressure on bony prominences, the systems play a critical role in managing and preventing pressure injuries for non-ambulant or severely restricted participants.

Prescription Requirement: Due to their complexity and bespoke nature, the assessment, prescription, and fitting of a custom-made sleep positioning system must be completed by a qualified Assistive Technology assessor, such as a Physiotherapist or Occupational Therapist, to ensure the item meets the participant’s functional and clinical requirements.
