Psychosocial Recovery Coaching (PRC) is a specialised capacity-building support under the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS). This support item, 07_101_0106_6_3, is specifically for coaching provided during Weekday Daytime hours (typically Monday to Friday, 6:00 am to 8:00 pm).

Purpose of the Support: Psychosocial Recovery Coaching is designed to support NDIS participants who have a primary psychosocial disability (arising from a mental health condition) to live a full and contributing life. The core objective is to support an individual's recovery journey, which means achieving an optimal state of personal, social, and emotional wellbeing as defined by the participant.

What a Psychosocial Recovery Coach Does: A Recovery Coach develops a supportive, recovery-enabling relationship with the participant, based on hope, trust, and choice. They provide guidance and coaching to help participants:

Build Capacity and Resilience: Increase personal capacity, self-awareness, motivation, strengths, and decision-making skills.

Recovery Planning: Collaborate on designing, planning, and implementing a personal recovery plan with clear goals and objectives.

System Navigation: Help the participant better understand the NDIS and support them in navigating the mental health and broader service system.

Coordinate Supports: Work collaboratively with the participant, their families, carers, and other services to coordinate NDIS and non-NDIS supports to ensure they are recovery-oriented.

Maintain Engagement: Provide ongoing support, designed to maintain engagement and plan for periods of increased support needs due to the episodic nature of mental illness.

Participants have the option of choosing a Recovery Coach with either lived experience (personal experience of mental ill health and recovery) or learned experience (specific mental health qualifications and experience). The support is typically provided on an ongoing basis over an extended period to help the participant take control of their lives and manage complex challenges of daily living.
