This support is designed for participants whose complex or harmful behaviours significantly impact their life, the lives of others, or place their ongoing support arrangements at risk. It involves the expertise of a highly skilled practitioner to develop and monitor a Specialist Behaviour Support Plan (SBSP).

Key Outcomes and Activities:

Comprehensive Assessment: Conducting detailed functional assessments to understand the purpose (function) of the challenging behaviour, including analysis of triggers and environmental factors.

Specialist Behaviour Support Plan (SBSP): Developing a written, person-centred plan that outlines strategies, preventative measures, and restrictive practices (if necessary and authorised) to reduce and eventually eliminate the occurrence of the challenging behaviours.

Training and Capacity Building: Providing training, mentoring, and coaching for support workers, family members, and other key stakeholders on how to effectively implement the SBSP and respond to behaviours.

Monitoring and Review: Regularly reviewing and adjusting the plan based on data collection and the participant's progress to ensure strategies remain effective and promote the participant's long-term well-being and inclusion.

Restrictive Practices: If the plan involves the use of regulated restrictive practices, this support covers the process of obtaining authorisations and adhering to strict legislative requirements (e.g., NDIS Act and Rules).

Professional Requirement: This support must be delivered by a Behaviour Support Practitioner who is considered suitably qualified and credentialled by the NDIS Commission (e.g., meeting the minimum capability framework requirements for a Specialist Behaviour Support Practitioner).
