This support item is located within the NDIS Capacity Building support category, under the sub-category Improved Relationships (Category 11).

The purpose of this line item is to fund the specialised work required to assess and develop a Behaviour Management Plan and provide training in the behaviour management strategies outlined in the plan. This support is essential for participants whose behaviours are a barrier to social participation and inclusion.

Key Outcomes and Activities:

Assessment and Plan Development: A suitably qualified practitioner undertakes a functional assessment of the participant's challenging behaviours. This assessment informs the development of a structured Behaviour Management Plan.

Focus on Capacity Building: The plan and subsequent training focus on building the capacity of the participant, their family, and their support network to understand the purpose of the behaviour and implement proactive and reactive strategies.

Training and Mentoring: A significant component is the provision of training, coaching, and mentoring to support workers, teachers, or family members on how to consistently and effectively use the strategies outlined in the plan to reduce the occurrence of the challenging behaviours.

Positive Behaviour Support (PBS): This support is aligned with the principles of Positive Behaviour Support, focusing on addressing underlying needs, modifying environments, and teaching the participant new, functionally equivalent skills.

Professional Requirement: This support must be delivered by a Behaviour Support Practitioner who meets the requirements of the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission and is registered at a level appropriate for the complexity of the plan and training required.
