Line Item Description

This support item is located within the NDIS Capacity Building support category, under Improved Daily Living (Category 12).

It funds the provision of advice, assessment, and intervention by a Dietitian to help participants manage their health and wellbeing through diet and nutrition, particularly where disability or complex health needs are a factor.

Key Outcomes and Activities:

Individualised Dietary Assessment: Conducting a comprehensive assessment of the participant’s nutritional status, dietary intake, lifestyle, and health goals, taking into account any physical, sensory, or cognitive difficulties that impact eating.

Specialist Advice and Planning: Providing evidence-based advice and developing individualised eating plans to manage complex health conditions such as diabetes, weight management, gastrointestinal issues, or swallowing difficulties (dysphagia) in collaboration with other therapists (e.g., Speech Pathologist).

Capacity Building and Education: Training the participant, their family, and support workers on food preparation, reading food labels, modifying food textures, ensuring adequate hydration, and maintaining a balanced, therapeutic diet.

Management of Intolerances/Allergies: Providing advice and planning for complex food allergies or intolerances to ensure nutritional needs are met safely and effectively.

Tube Feeding/Enteral Nutrition: Where required, providing planning, management, and training related to enteral (tube) feeding regimens.

Professional Requirement: This support must be delivered by a Dietitian who is an Accredited Practising Dietitian (APD) as recognised by Dietitians Australia.
