This support item is located within the NDIS Capacity Building support category, under Improved Daily Living (Category 15). This funding is used for therapeutic supports aimed at improving the participant's functional skills and independence in daily life.

This item specifically funds services delivered by a Therapy Assistant (Level 1). The Therapy Assistant works directly with the participant to implement therapeutic programs that have been designed, delegated, and closely monitored by a qualified Allied Health Professional (AHP), such as an Occupational Therapist, Physiotherapist, or Speech Pathologist.

Key Roles and Characteristics of a Level 1 Therapy Assistant:

Direct Supervision: A Level 1 Assistant typically requires frequent and direct supervision from the qualified therapist due to their entry-level qualifications (e.g., Certificate III or IV) or less extensive experience.

Program Implementation: The primary role is to carry out routine, prescribed therapeutic activities as directed by the AHP. This might include practicing exercises, communication strategies, sensory regulation techniques, or functional activities.

Capacity Building through Practice: The goal is to provide consistent, high-frequency practice sessions to help the participant build their skills and achieve their NDIS goals faster and more cost-effectively than using the AHP alone for every session.

Data Collection: The assistant is responsible for accurately recording the participant’s engagement and progress during the session and reporting back to the supervising therapist for review and adjustment of the plan.

Focus on Daily Living: The support targets functional outcomes and skill acquisition that lead to greater independence in daily routines and community participation.

Professional Requirement: This support must be delivered by a Therapy Assistant working under the supervision of a relevant, accredited Allied Health Professional (AHP).
