From 1st July, 2017, non-resident businesses supplying services and digital products to Australian consumers and have a turnover that meet the threshold of A$75,000 will need to register for GST.
There are two ways that overseas businesses can register for GST:
Simplified BAS
From 1 July 2017, Simpler BAS will be the standard reporting option for small businesses. It reduces the amount of GST information required to be reported on the BAS to simplify GST bookkeeping requirements.
The simplified system for non-resident businesses is available electronically to register, lodge and pay their GST. This can be used to make inbound intangible consumer sales.
By using the simplified registration system, you:
- can register electronically with minimal proof of identity
- can lodge and pay GST quarterly
- will not need to provide a tax invoice or adjustment note to your customers
- will not able to claim tax credits.
Use the ATO’s Simplified Online GST Registration to register.
You will require an AUSid account to register which will allow you to login to the Australian Government online services. To create your AUSid account you will need to download the AUSid application from the app store.
Standard BAS
To register for the standard system, an Australian Business Number (ABN) is required.
It can take 28 days to process your GST registration, so be sure to allow enough time to complete your registration.
