If you or a loved one are navigating the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS), you might have heard of Short Term Accommodation. But what exactly is STA NDIS funding, and how can it support you and your primary carers? In this guide, we will break down what STA is, and how it works.
What is Short Term Accommodation (STA)?
Short Term Accommodation (STA) is an NDIS support designed to give you a temporary break from your usual care arrangements. Sometimes referred to as respite, it is primarily used to support you while the people who usually care for you—such as family members, friends, or informal carers—take a well-deserved short break.
This funding ensures that while your regular caregivers rest, you continue to receive the high-quality support you need in a safe, comfortable environment.
What Does STA Funding Cover?
When the NDIS funds your STA, it is based on the level of support you usually require so that your routine is maintained. You can use your funding for:
- Everyday Supports: Help with daily activities such as showering, cooking, and toileting.
- Accommodation: Standard lodgings like a hotel, motel, cabin, short-stay rental, or a dedicated respite facility.
- At-Home Support: You can even choose to stay in your own home with a support worker for overnight care if you prefer not to travel.
What is NOT covered?
It is important to remember that STA is not a holiday fund. You cannot use this funding for things like airfares, cruise packages, passports, theme park tickets, or general holiday expenses for family members.
Understanding STA NDIS Rates
When it comes to billing and managing your budget, it is important to understand STA NDIS rates. The NDIS pricing schedule includes specific line items for Short Term Accommodation. These standard rates are regulated to ensure fair pricing. You should only ever pay for the supports and the amount of time you actually use.

IMPORTANT: Participants can only claim Short Term Accommodation (STA) funding if it is explicitly included in their approved NDIS plan. It is completely normal for care needs to shift over time, so if your situation has recently changed or you feel your current plan doesn't accurately reflect your need for respite, you have the right to advocate for yourself. Simply reach out to your NDIS contact to request a plan reassessment and ensure your funding aligns with your current reality.
