• CORE Social Community and Civic Participation

SOCIAL, COMMUNITY AND CIVIC PARTICIPATION (also called ASSISTANCE WITH SOCIAL, ECONOMIC AND COMMUNITY PARTICIPATION): Supports enabling a participant to engage in community, social or recreational activities. They may be provided in a centre or in community settings at standard or higher intensity rates. Usually related to the Outcome Domain: Social and Community Participation + Work and CORE Support Purpose. In the MyPlace portal and NDIS Plan it is shown as 'Social, community and civic participation".

The NDIS Social and Community Participation support category (Core) is designed to assist or supervise a participant in engaging in community, social, recreational, or economic activities. These supports can be delivered in various settings, including in the community or at a centre.

These line items are broken down into several areas, including individual access, group activities, and employment supports.

NDIS Line Items

Participation in Community, Social and Civic Activities

These supports are fundamental to community access NDIS funding. The line items are intended to enable a participant to engage in community, social, and recreational activities. This support can be provided on an individual basis or to a group.

For participants who require a more skilled or experienced support worker to participate, specific High Intensity Support line items are available.

Group and Centre Based Activities

These supports assist participants in accessing NDIS social and community participation activities within a group setting. This can happen either in the community or at a provider's centre.

Similar to individual supports, there are standard line items and High Intensity line items for participants who require a more skilled or experienced worker in the group environment. When these supports are provided in a centre, providers may also be able to claim for Centre Capital Costs.

Supports in Employment

This category also includes supports to help participants maintain employment. The Specialised Supported Employment items are for participants who are employed but are less independent or need frequent prompting and coaching to perform work tasks, communicate, or manage behaviours.

These supports can include:

• On-the-job assessments related to the impact of the disability
• Job customisation
• Direct supervision or group-based support at work
• Physical assistance and personal care delivered in the workplace
• Supports to manage disability-related behaviour at work

Additional Activity Costs

A specific line item, Community, Social and Recreational Activities, is designed to cover the additional disability-related costs that enable a participant to engage in activities independently.

It is important to note this support does not cover standard activity costs. Excluded costs include:

• Fees for outside school hours care
• Standard costs for recreational sports like membership fees, venue hire, or uniforms
• Standard recreational equipment like toys, balls, or racquets
• General health, fitness, or gym membership costs
  
  

This item is only for claiming the disability-specific costs associated with the activity.

General Claiming Rules for Participation Supports

Across most community access NDIS supports (excluding the 'Additional Activity Costs' item), providers can also claim for associated costs when agreed upon with the participant. These include:

• Non-Face-to-Face Support Provision
• Provider Travel and Provider Travel - Non-Labour Costs
• Activity Based Transport, which covers the provider's costs associated with transporting the participant during an activity
• Short Notice Cancellations (typically 7 days' notice is required for these supports)
